Tea Tree
History
Its botanical name is ‘Melaleuca alternifolia’. It seems that it came to be known as the tea tree when Captain Cook, upon arriving in Australia in 1770, saw the locals making a drink from the leaves of a plant he did not recognise. That was enough for an Englishman to call that plant the tea tree!
From Australia to the Mediterranean
It is a plant that has adapted very well to Sardinia, much like the eucalyptus, and we can say that it is now naturalised. We can find large and numerous specimens growing wild, particularly along the coast.
The raw material we distil to produce the essential oil and hydrosol comes from plants found in the province of Oristano, very close to the sea.
