Lentischio - The Mastic tree

In the Mediterranean

The mastic tree is a plant that grows in abundance in Sardinia; known as ‘Chessa’ or ‘Moddizzu’, it has always been used for its fragrant wood and for its berries, from which an oil is extracted (by cold pressing) that is very expensive and has numerous beneficial properties. It can serve as an excellent ‘carrier’ oil for essential oils.

It has always been used by the Greeks and Romans, and is still cultivated today on the island of Chios, in Greece, for the extraction of mastic; the plant is known throughout the world by this very name. It is an extremely unique and fascinating process.

Essential oil and hydrosol

It is still not widely used in aromatherapy, but its properties make it a very effective oil for the respiratory system and superficial circulation. It is also an excellent mouth antiseptic; in this case, the hydrosol is perfect for use as a mouthwash.

It has an intense, distinctive scent, with notes of resin, greenery and bitterness. In perfumery, it is used as a fixative.

Its chemical profile is characterised by monoterpenes.

The mastic tree is a plant that thrives in the hot, dry Mediterranean summers. It is able to survive even after extreme events such as wildfires.
